SAL’S FAMOUS GRANDMA PIES

Sal’s Pizzeria specializes in Grandma Style Pizza. Sal and his family have been making this relatively unknown Grandma Style pie since the 1950s and have perfected their recipe.

Grandma Style pies have yet to penetrate Southern California so we are excited to bring it to Southern California and to share this epic pizza experience with you.

HISTORY OF THE GRANDMA PIE

The origins of the Grandma Pie are somewhat unknown. What we do know is that the style was most likely born in Sicily. Italian Grandmas wanted to make fresh and fast pizza in their home ovens for the family. They didn’t have pizza screens, so they used what was already in their kitchens – cookie sheets – explaining the rectangular shape.

In the late 1950s, as Italians immigrated to New York, the Grandma-style pizza began to appear. Umberto’s of Long Island, NY, claims to be one of the first to bring this style to the US.

When Sal and his family made the trip from Sicily in 1951, he was one of these first Grandma-style pioneers, and he’s been making the Grandma Pie ever since. Up until now, he only made it for his family, but now we are happy to bring Sal’s Grandma Pie to Southern California.

Now you’re all family. We hope you enjoy it.
